Description
Here’s a beautiful near mint Payne Model 98 fly rod, 2pc 2 tips for a 4/5wt line. Weighs 2 7/8oz. Hang tag is marked that this is #122. It is unclear on Payne rod whether this is a serial number, or an invoice or accounting type number.
I believe this rod is from the late 1960s, early 1970s Dave Decker/Walt Carpenter era while the company was still in Highland Mills, NY.
Rod is all original, and features a cap & ring skeleton seat with blued hardware. Cap has the Payne “Reg U.S. Pat Off.” logo.
This very lightly used rod even has the factory orginal ferrule plug.
To add to the minty condition of this rod, the previous owner had a beautiful tube over bag made with Payne embrodered on it.
Rod comes with the original cloth rod bag with the Highland Mills marked hang tag still attached, as well as the original mint condition labeled Payne tube.
As a bonus, this rod also includes an original near mint Payne catalog from the 70s, autographed by Walt Carpenter.
The catalog is 12 pages of great history and also includes 2 identical and separate price lists, as well as the original envelope.
Rods of this caliber, and in this kind of original condition don’t come around very often.
Item #2312 Near Mint Condition with Catalog Price Reduced $4250.00
